A Hakone Freepass can combine local trains, the ropeway and sightseeing cruise, but the Shinjuku return version and the Odawara local-start version cover different journeys. Choose the starting station before comparing prices.

Compare the Shinjuku version if you will return to Shinjuku. For an arrival from another region followed by travel onward, start with the Odawara version. Add any required Romancecar fare and limited-express ticket separately.

Choose the return city first

A trip from Tokyo to Hakone and back to Shinjuku needs different coverage from a trip arriving at Odawara from Kyoto and continuing to another city. Match the departure station to the fare table and price any uncovered intercity travel separately. The more expensive pass does not necessarily cover your entire journey.

Two days does not mean 48 hours

The official validity is two or three consecutive days from first use. Starting late in the afternoon does not give you 48 hours from that moment. Mark your hotel arrival, sightseeing start and final travel day on a calendar. The original review records adult fares of ¥7,100 and ¥7,500 from Shinjuku, and ¥6,000 and ¥6,400 from Odawara for two and three days respectively. Recheck the official price before purchase.

Separate the basic fare from the express seat

The Freepass alone does not let you board the Romancecar. The Shinjuku version includes the relevant return basic fare, but a limited-express ticket is additional. If you use the Odawara version and take a Romancecar from Odawara to Shinjuku, add both the basic fare outside the pass area and the express ticket. Match the date, train and seat to your reservation.

Check bus boundaries and actual operation

Coverage includes the mountain railway, cable car, ropeway, Hakone sightseeing cruise and designated bus sections. It does not include every similarly named bus or every attraction admission. Mark your destinations on the official coverage map and budget separately for entrance tickets. During bad weather or maintenance, use current service notices to reduce risky connections.

Common questions

Can I buy it for a day trip?

You can plan a day trip with a two-day pass. Compare it with the individual fares you will actually use; an unused second day is not automatically a saving.

Does the Odawara version include the return to Shinjuku?

The Odawara–Shinjuku basic fare is not included. A limited-express journey also requires the separate express ticket.
