For high-speed rail from Hong Kong to mainland China, do not arrive at the gates just before departure as you might for a city MTR journey. At West Kowloon, you must complete booking-ID verification, security and immigration procedures before boarding.

Bring the original ID used for the booking, measure your luggage and arrive comfortably ahead of the official cutoffs. Check entry eligibility separately from buying a train ticket.

Keep the original booking ID ready

The official instructions require the ID used to buy the ticket for real-name verification and boarding. If you booked with a Korean passport, check the passport number and name in Latin letters and have the original ready to present. Do not assume an order-confirmation email can replace identification. Compare each companion’s documents with their own booking too.

Thirty minutes and five minutes are different deadlines

MTR distinguishes real-name verification and ticket checks, which close 30 minutes before departure, from boarding gates, which open 15 minutes before and close 5 minutes before departure. This does not mean you can arrive at the station five minutes before the train. Leave extra processing time for passport users and weekends or public holidays. Plan travel from your hotel separately from procedures inside the station.

Measure luggage against rail rules, not airline rules

The source-reviewed high-speed rail guidance allows adults 20 kg in total, with each item’s length, width and height adding up to no more than 130 cm. A bag accepted by an airline is not automatically accepted on the train. High-speed rail has no checked-luggage service, so make a separate plan for oversized bags. Keep essential documents and items needed that day easy to reach.

Check mainland entry requirements separately

A train ticket does not establish that you satisfy entry conditions at the destination. Check passport and entry eligibility for your travel date with the responsible authorities. This guide does not determine an individual traveller’s eligibility. After West Kowloon security and immigration procedures, recheck the train and gate on the boarding displays and watch for changes.

Separate high-speed rail limits apply: 20 kg total for adults and no more than 130 cm across the three dimensions of each item.
