Before booking JR Bus Kanto, check whether your suitcase can be carried in the luggage compartment on your particular route. Kanto–Keihanshin services, Tokyo–Narita Airport services and other routes do not share one identical allowance.

Confirm the route and actual operator, then compare total dimensions, weight and bag count. Airline or Shinkansen luggage rules do not automatically apply to highway buses.

The JR name does not mean railway luggage rules apply
This guide follows JR Bus Kanto’s luggage guidance revised on February 1, 2026. Shinkansen and highway-bus baggage conditions differ. For jointly operated services, check the actual operator on the booking. Ask the operator before departure about large items near the limits or special equipment, and prepare an alternative such as separate delivery if the items cannot travel.
Measure hand luggage and compartment luggage separately
The official table distinguishes onboard hand luggage from route-specific compartment limits. The source-reviewed limits differ: Kanto–Keihanshin allows up to 10 kg and 150 cm in combined dimensions, while other routes allow up to 30 kg and 250 cm in combined dimensions. Separate length limits also apply; meeting the combined-dimension rule alone is insufficient. Measure the exterior including wheels and handles, and pack to a size you can handle yourself.
Check extra suitcases and equipment on the Narita route
The official Tokyo–Narita Airport notice describes generally about one suitcase per passenger, with combined dimensions no more than 158 cm. It states that suitcases exceeding the passenger count, bicycles, skis, golf bags, large musical instruments and boxes cannot be brought into either the cabin or luggage compartment. Do not carry equipment rules from another route over to this airport service. Ask first if you intend to split your belongings across several bags.
Keep valuables and batteries with you
The revised guidance says to keep cash, valuables, computers, cameras and power banks in your hand luggage rather than the compartment. Remove these items before loading the bag and retain luggage or identification tags. Compliant baggage is not guaranteed acceptance if many passengers’ bags leave insufficient space. On an airport journey, prepare an alternative service and allow a comfortable arrival margin.
