At Matsuyama Castle in Ehime, decide separately on the free main plaza, paid keep entry and transport up the hill. If you want to enter the keep, plan around its admission cutoff and your departure from the lower station.

Who this guide is for: Visitors planning keep entry with children or rolling luggage

Check children’s lift eligibility and luggage retrieval before setting your keep visit. The ropeway leaves slopes and steps beyond the upper station.

Separate keep entry from ascent transport

The Honmaru plaza is free. Keep entry costs ¥520 for adults and ¥160 for elementary-school pupils. Separate shared ropeway/lift tickets cost ¥520 return or ¥270 one-way for adults, and ¥260 return or ¥140 one-way for children. Check whether a selected product includes keep entry. Bring cash: the Chojagahira summit side accepts cash only.

Check lift age limits and rain

The chairlift is for elementary-school age and older and stops in rain. A shared ticket allows a choice of ropeway or lift, subject to actual operation that day. The operator’s access guide places ticket machines on the first floor of Shinonomeguchi station and boarding on the third. You still need to walk from the upper station to the keep.

Distinguish keep entry from the last ropeway

The keep normally opens 09:00–17:00, closing at 17:30 in August and 16:30 in December–January. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing, and crowds can end ticket sales earlier. For keep visits, the operator recommends arriving in time to take the 16:00 ropeway normally, 16:30 in August or 15:30 in December–January. These are not the final ropeway departures. Check dated notices and the third-Wednesday closure in December.

Plan bag retrieval and stairs

Rolling bags cannot enter the keep. Shinonomeguchi station lockers are listed at ¥200 large or ¥100 small for one use that day; availability and fit are unconfirmed. The station locks when ropeway operation ends, so include bag retrieval in your return plan. The keep has no lift or toilet, has steep stairs and cannot accommodate wheelchair entry. Slopes and steps beyond the ropeway may also require a companion’s help.

Common questions

Does a return ropeway ticket include keep entry?

The operator lists keep entry separately from ropeway/lift fares. Check your selected product’s inclusions and identify which tickets you need.

Does the ropeway provide step-free access into the keep?

Slopes and steps remain above the ropeway, and the keep has no lift. Assess assistance for the plaza separately from access inside the keep.
