The official English page retains reopening-era booking instructions. Check the dated Japanese change and your travel-date exhibition before using its old quotas or the usual ¥500 fare.

Who this guide is for: Visitors checking outdated English reservation guidance, travel-date fees and mobility help

Individuals in parties of 1–19 have not needed advance booking since 1 April 2023. Crowding can still restrict entry. Check closures and ask about assistance before planning the castle visit.

Use the dated booking change

The Japanese reservation page and linked notice state that individuals in parties of 1–19 can visit without advance booking on weekdays, weekends and holidays from 1 April 2023. Crowding may restrict entry. Do not apply the English page’s 2022 reopening quotas and same-day ticket instructions as today’s required process. Groups of 20 or more should contact the museum by telephone in advance.

Separate the usual and special fares

The usual adult ¥500 listing explicitly warns that special-exhibition fees differ. Fukuyama Sword Stories (福山刀剣物語), 3 October–23 November 2026, lists adult admission at ¥700, or ¥560 for groups of 20 or more. Do not automatically add ¥700 to ¥500 or transfer a normal discount-card rate to this exhibition. Check each later exhibition separately.

Senior free entry has a residency condition

High-school students and younger visitors enter free. The age-65-or-older concession applies to residents of Fukuyama City, Fuchu City and Jinsekikogen Town, rather than all visiting seniors. Discount and free-entry categories require documentation at reception. Ask the museum about unclear foreign documents or disability/caregiver eligibility before travelling.

Check the cutoff and display-change closures

Normal opening is 9:00–17:00, last entry 16:30. The museum closes Mondays, the following day when Monday is a national holiday, 28–31 December and for display changes. The current exhibition specifies opening on 12 October and 23 November, with closure on 13 October. The keep museum also closes for a changeover on 25–26 November. Recheck notices; a museum closure does not establish closure of the whole castle park.

Ask staff about ramps and lifting equipment

The accessibility page lists two outdoor ramps: west plaza to the keep base, then the front base to the entrance. Two stair lifts serve the entrance/reception and basement approaches. A platform lift connects the first floor and small-keep shop. A priority elevator serves basement to top-floor level 5 for wheelchair users, people with limited mobility and pregnant visitors, among others. These facilities do not establish an independently accessible route from the station; discuss your assistance needs.

Allow time beyond the station approach

The official approach is about five minutes from JR Fukuyama Station’s North Exit. Add platform access, the castle approach, viewing and queues before an onward train. The museum shop is inside the paid museum. The 24 December 2024 exterior photograph does not show current exhibitions, admission or ramp positions.

Common questions

Must I book 50 days ahead as the English page says?

For individuals in parties of 1–19, check the dated April 2023 change to walk-in entry. Crowding restrictions and group arrangements remain separate.

Do all tourists aged 65+ enter free?

No. The published senior concession specifies residents of Fukuyama, Fuchu and Jinsekikogen. Age alone is not the stated condition.
