At Kyoto Railway Museum, viewing the exhibits, using the driving simulator and riding the steam train require different ticket arrangements. Decide which experience your child wants before checking admission and reservations separately.

If the simulator is your priority, check its online experience tickets first. Steam train tickets follow a separate procedure at the SL boarding area inside the museum.

Plan admission and experiences separately
A museum admission ticket and a driving simulator ticket serve different purposes. The official adult admission rate is ¥1,500 for ages 18 and over, with separate student and child categories. If your child expects to drive the simulator, read the dates and conditions on its sales page before paying for admission. Decide whether everyone in your party needs the same experience.
Do not rely on buying simulator tickets with cash on arrival
The official overseas visitor FAQ says simulator tickets are bought on the Asoview website using a credit card and are not sold for cash on site. Check that you can make the payment and open your order details on the day. If you cannot secure the experience, agree with your family whether viewing the exhibits alone will be enough.
Buy SL tickets inside the museum
The official FAQ directs visitors to buy steam train ride tickets at the SL boarding area inside the museum. An online simulator ticket does not also include the SL ride. Check the operating information and boarding location inside, then arrange your exhibition route around any experience queues.
Plan closures and luggage before arrival
Normal visiting hours are 10:00–17:00, with last admission at 16:30. There are exceptions to the Wednesday and December 30–January 1 closures, so check the calendar for your date. The FAQ says there is no luggage storage service and coin lockers are provided in two locations. Arrange storage at your accommodation for suitcases that will not fit. Re-entry is allowed until 16:30 on presentation of your ticket.
