Choose your Nara bus pass by the journeys you will actually make. Start with the standard pass for Nara Park and Nishinokyo; check Wide coverage if your bus itinerary extends toward Horyuji.

Who this guide is for: Day visitors starting at JR Nara or Kintetsu Nara and planning Nara Park, Nishinokyo or Horyuji
The standard adult pass costs ¥600 and Wide costs ¥1,100. Separate rail and bus journeys before choosing Wide simply because Horyuji is on your itinerary.

Coverage comes first
The standard 1-Day Pass covers designated local-bus travel in the Nara Park and Nishinokyo areas for one day: ¥600 adult or ¥300 child. Wide adds the Horyuji area and costs ¥1,100 adult or ¥550 child. Match each intended stop and segment to the official coverage map.
A Horyuji visit does not automatically mean Wide
Write down your starting station, visits and return journey, then separate walking, rail and bus segments. Compare the bus fares you would actually pay with the pass price. For Wide, check the outward and return route in the designated Horyuji area. Budget separately for rail travel and temple admission.
Buy before leaving the sales area
Both passes are sold at the JR Nara, Kintetsu Nara, Gakuenmae, Oji and Yagi bus information centers. The operator specifically says Wide is not sold at Yamato-Saidaiji or Nishinokyo stations. Check your chosen counter’s opening hours before starting the trip. Travel-agency sales may carry a service fee.
Check directions and how to board
Use the April 2026 official English route map to match stops, directions, transfers and coverage. Nara Kotsu describes four boarding and payment systems. Flat-fare prepaid services around JR Nara and Kintetsu Nara use the front door to board and rear door to exit. Distance-based services may use a numbered ticket with payment at exit. Follow the actual vehicle signs and driver’s instructions.
The photograph is dated context
The photograph shows a Nara Kotsu City Loop bus outside Kintetsu Nara Station on 17 April 2021. It does not establish current vehicle availability, service or pass validity. Check the current official map and timetable before travelling; do not assume that a community bus or another product has the same coverage.

Common questions
Do I need a pass just to visit Nara Park?
No. Decide which journeys you will walk and which you will take by bus, then compare current individual fares.
Is Wide always better for Horyuji?
Check whether you will use rail for part of the trip and whether your actual bus segments require Wide coverage.
Can I buy Wide at Nishinokyo Station?
The operator says it is not sold there. Check the listed sales counters and their opening hours before departure.
