Reserved and non-reserved Taiwan High Speed Rail tickets do not provide the same seating guarantee. For travel from Taipei toward Taichung, Tainan or Kaohsiung, decide whether the departure must be fixed and whether everyone needs to sit.

Start with reserved seats when seating and departure time matter. Non-reserved travel follows the conditions for that date and does not guarantee a seat.

Reserve first when sitting is essential

The official guide describes standard and business reserved tickets as date- and train-specific. If you travel with parents or children, or have a timed booking after arrival, securing seats before arranging the connection makes the schedule easier to manage. Check that seats for your companions are available on the same train before focusing on seat spacing.

Non-reserved means foregoing a seat reservation

Seats are not guaranteed, and the reviewed official guidance says non-reserved tickets are sold on the travel day. Buying one does not establish that you can sit. Use the train timetable and station signs to identify the non-reserved cars. On busy days, discuss the possibility of standing with your companions in advance.

Station arrival is not destination arrival

Separate travel to the departure station, the high-speed journey and the connection from the arrival station. A city name on a station does not mean it is next to your hotel or attraction. Even if your train plans are flexible, a fixed local connection or another booking may make a reserved train a better fit.

Read change conditions and luggage guidance before buying

For reserved travel, confirm the date and train and read the current change or cancellation terms of your purchase channel. Moving to non-reserved travel does not preserve the same assigned seat. For large bags, read the railway’s size and storage guidance and avoid blocking doors or aisles.

Common questions

Does a non-reserved ticket secure a seat?

No. Official guidance says seats are not guaranteed. Compare reserved tickets if sitting is essential.

Can I reserve non-reserved travel several days ahead?

The official ticket guide describes same-day sales without reservations. Distinguish a seller’s exchange voucher from the actual non-reserved rail ticket.
