One castle ticket does not cover both palaces. Choose Ninomaru-inclusive admission or a separate Honmaru reservation. For Honmaru, allow a walk from the castle gate before your booked time.

Who this guide is for: Kyoto visitors choosing gardens, one palace or both palaces at Nijo Castle
Castle-only suits a garden visit. Add Ninomaru if viewing its interior. Honmaru’s fee excludes castle admission.

Compare standard adult totals
Castle-only costs ¥800; castle plus Ninomaru costs ¥1,300. Honmaru adds ¥1,000: castle plus Honmaru totals ¥1,800, or ¥2,300 with both palaces. These are individual standard-adult totals; other eligibility follows the official fee table.
Book Honmaru first
Web reservations open 30 days ahead; changes, cancellation and refunds are not allowed. Exempt visitors also need reservations. The gate-side castle ticket office does not sell Honmaru tickets. Limited same-day stock at the inside information desk is not guaranteed.
The castle gate is not your appointment point
The Japanese operator page requests castle entry at least 20 minutes before the reservation. The shortest gate-to-Honmaru route is about 850 metres, taking 15–20 minutes. Add Ninomaru viewing or baggage-handling time; arrive earlier if walking slowly.
Separate entry cutoffs
Castle entry runs 08:45–16:00, closing at 17:00. Ninomaru reception ends at 16:10; Honmaru requires a selected reservation time. Do not treat closing time as entry time.
Palaces can close while grounds remain open
The castle closes 29–31 December. Ninomaru has Tuesday closures in January, July, August and December, plus year-end dates. Honmaru has monthly third-Monday/following-day closures. Check the official calendar and holiday exceptions for each palace.
Prepare socks, baggage and accessibility
Remove shoes and wear socks in Honmaru; leave bags in lockers and check main-rest-area storage for larger items. Both palace interiors prohibit photography/video. Wheelchair visits require transfer to a provided chair; read official conditions before buying if transfer is difficult.

Common questions
Is the ¥1,000 Honmaru ticket sufficient?
Castle entry costs extra. Decide whether to add Ninomaru before choosing castle-only or inclusive admission.
Does the photo show Honmaru?
No. It is a historical view of Kara-mon and Ninomaru behind it, not current ticketing or visitor routes.
